Trinity County was founded in 1850 in California. The County was named after Trinity River, named that way by Major Pierson B. Reading, in 1845, since he was under the mistaken impression that the river emptied into Trinidad Bay.  Trinity County’s Courthouse in Weaverville is the second oldest in California, it was built in 1856, only six years after the county was founded.

The Trinity County was originally populated by the Hupas, Karuks, Yuroks, Chimarikos, De-no-tos Cultural District, Tsnungwes, Whikuts and Yuroks people. These tribes engaged with other Californian tribes of Native Americans in hunting, trading plants and other animals products.
