Kern County takes its name from the Kern River, which in turn takes its name from Edward Kern, who was the cartographer for John C. Frémont’s 1845 expedition that passed through the area. For several millennium what is now Kern County was home only to tribes of the Yokuts people. The land was claimed by the Spanish Empire in 1769, though the first European to see it, the explorer and later Alta California Governor, Pedro Fages, didn’t arrive until 1772 and aside from the occasional Franciscan missionary and a battle between Mexican soldiers and natives fleeing confinement at Mission Santa Barbra in 1824 it remained largely ignored by colonists until several large Mexican land grants were made just prior to California becoming part of the United States.
