KERN COUNTY, CALIFORNIA OVERVIEW

The clients of Kern County mesothelioma lawyers are individuals and families who live in California’s dynamic and ever-growing Kern County whose lives have been catastrophically injured by mesothelioma.  Nearly the size of New Hampshire, its 8,163 square miles makes Kern County the third-largest geographical county in California.  It reaches across the southern San Joaquin Valley from the Coast Ranges in the west up and over the Sierra Nevada in the east and the Tehachapi Mountains in the south to claim a vast swath of the Mojave Desert.  It is a land heavy invested in agriculture, oil, aviation, the military and even space travel as the landings of the space shuttle at Edwards Air Force base have progressed to soon to be expected reusable spaceplanes trips and space tourism originating at the Mojave Air and Space Port.  Kern County residents feed the nation, find its fuels, mine is minerals and break through sound barriers with innovative speed.  It remains one of the fastest growing populations in the United States.

Kern County is bordered by San Bernardino County to the east, Inyo, Tulare, and Kings Counties to the north, San Luis Obispo County to the west, Ventura and Los Angeles Counties to the south, and it touches the corner of Santa Barbara County to the southwest.

In 2020, Kern County, California was home to 840,000 people, with 347,483 of them living in its county seat and important regional hub of Bakersfield.  Its other cities are Delano (pop. 53,041), Ridgecrest (pop. 27,616), Wasco (pop. 25,545), Arvin (pop. 19,304), Shafter (pop. 16988), Tehachapi (pop. 14,414), California City (pop. 14,120), McFarland (pop. 12,707), Taft (pop. 9, 327), and Maricopa (pop. 1,154).  Many Kern County residents also live in one of Kern County’s unincorporated communities, some of which are quite large and continuing to grow quite quickly, the most notable of which would be the Bakersfield suburb of Oildale (pop. 32,684) – which has gained over 27,000 new residents since 2000.  Other notable unincorporated communities in Kern County are Rosamond (pop. 18,150), Lamont (pop. 15,120), Rosedale (pop. 14,058), Golden Hills (pop. 8,656), Greenacres (pop. 5,566), Bear Valley Springs (pop. 5,172), Ford City (pop. 4,278), and Mojave (pop. 4,238).

Kern County takes its name from the Kern River, which in turn takes its name from Edward Kern, who was the cartographer for John C. Frémont’s 1845 expedition that passed through the area.  For several millennium what is now Kern County was home only to tribes of the Yokuts people.  The land was claimed by the Spanish Empire in 1769, though the first European to see it, the explorer and later Alta California Governor, Pedro Fages, didn’t arrive until 1772 and aside from the occasional Franciscan missionary and a battle between Mexican soldiers and natives fleeing confinement at Mission Santa Barbra in 1824 it remained largely ignored by colonists until several large Mexican land grants were made just prior to California becoming part of the United States.  For many years mining in the mountains and the desert was the region’s principle industry and Kern County was formed in 1866.  The flatlands of the south San Joaquin Valley, prone to catastrophic flooding, full of swamps, tule reed wetlands, and malaria were slow to develop, but the draining of lands and digging of canals (hard hand labor frequently done by Chinese immigrants), swiftly lead to the development of agriculture and the county’s economy moved out of the mountains to the new thriving city of Bakersfield. The discovery of the Kern River Oil Field in 1899 led to enormous developments for the petroleum industry from which Kern County has never looked back.  The geology of Kern County brings it oil, but it also brings earthquakes as the notorious San Andreas Fault passes through the region, bringing an enormous 7.9 magnitude quake in 1857 (“Ft. Tejon Earthquake”) and the tragic 7.3 magnitude 1952 quake simply remembered as the “Kern County Earthquake.”  Most recently, the county experienced several very large earthquakes over several days near Ridgecrest in 2019.

Kern County mesothelioma lawsuits may be handled in the Kern County civil court system.  Such lawsuits may also be filed in other California counties which have civil court departments dedicated to handling mesothelioma lawsuits, even Kern County mesothelioma lawsuits.  Kern County court facilities are spread out countywide. Civil cases like Kern County mesothelioma lawsuits, may be heard in courthouses located in Bakersfield, Delano, Kern River, Lamont, Mojave, Ridgecrest, Shafter, or Taft.  Interestingly, Kern County’s first courthouse was located in Havilah, which served as the original seat of Kern County from 1866 to 1874, before it moved to Bakersfield.  Havilah, located in the mountains between the Walker Basin and the Kern River Valley, was briefly a thriving mining boom town with a population of over a 1,000, a host of saloons and over 100 businesses.  Today almost nothing remains of this community.  Whichever county a Kern County mesothelioma lawsuit may ultimately be filed in, due to the pressing and time sensitive nature of mesothelioma cases plaintiffs in Kern County mesothelioma lawsuits are often given priority, as many counties where Kern County mesothelioma lawsuits may be heard have departments dedicated to hearing mesothelioma lawsuits allowing them to proceed to trial in a highly accelerated fashion and helping Kern County mesothelioma lawsuits to be resolved as quickly as possible.
