ANTIOCH, CALIFORNIA OVERVIEW
The city of Antioch is in Contra Costa County, located in the San Francisco Bay area of Northern California. With over 111,000 residents, Antioch is the second largest city in Contra Costa County. Antioch is located near the junction of the San Joaquin and Sacramento Rivers.
The Antioch area was originally inhabited by the Bay Miwok native tribes, sustained by the plentiful game, acorns, roots and berries of the region. The Bay Miwok constructed cone-shaped homes framed with wooden poles and covered with bark.
Antioch, like much of Contra Costa County, has its origins in the Mexican grant system. Antioch was created from two adjoining ranchos- Los Meganos, and Los Medanos. Los Maganos was granted to Jose Noriega in 1834. Los Medanos was granted to Colonel Jonathan Drake Stevenson in 1839.
The Smith twins from New Hampshire are generally considered the founders of Antioch, creating a new town called Smith’s Landing. In 1851 the town was renamed Antioch, after the Biblical city in Syria. Antioch’s convenient river location, three miles of river frontage, and 40-foot channel contributed to its development as a commercial center for the region.
In the 1850s, coal was discovered south of Antioch in the foothills of Mount Diablo. and the area became a hub for mining. Oil refineries and a PG&E steam electric plant contributed to the industrialization of the town. Antioch’s ready supply of clay and sand was used in the aftermath of the 1906 San Francisco earthquake. The growing towns kilns helped supply the brick, clay tiles, sewer and stove pipes needed to rebuild the devastated city
Antioch also hosted a copper smelter, paper mills and a distillery. Canneries and packing sheds for processing produce from the Delta region also opened up. In 1996, Antioch erected a privately funded tribute to the “Cannery Lady.” The bronze statute is reported to be the first non-military commemoration of working women west of the Mississippi.
Antioch is not just known for its industrial heritage. The east shore of the San Joaquin River is a currently a national wildlife refuge. The 50-acre Antioch sand dunes are the only place on earth where the endangered Lange’s metalmark butterfly lives. The endangered Antioch Dunes evening primrose and Contra Costa wallflower can also be found in this unique habitat.
