CORONA, CALIFORNIA OVERVIEW

Corona city was incorporated on July 13, 1986, originally named South Riverside. It has a population of 168,819, approximately, and is the 31st most populated city in the state of California, United States. Its northern border reaches Norco and Riverside, on the western border reaches Irvine, on the eastern border reaches Palm Springs and the city of Murrieta on the southern border.

Corona is a city located in the Riverside County, situated along the western edge of Southern California’s Inland Empire region and at the upper end of the Santa Ana River Canyon. The city of Corona is also known as the “Circle City” due to Grand Boulevard’s 3-mile circular layout, where three international automobile races were held in 1913, 1914 and 1916. Corona is the Spanish word for Crown.

The area of Corona City was first inhabited by the Cahuilla and Serrano people, but it was also populated by the Gabrielino, Serrano, Luise’o, Chemehuevi, and Mojave tribes, including, the urban Indians who moved here in the 20th century, as well. Cahuilla natives used tin as a tribal medicine, therefore an indian guide engaged by a local frontiersman and led him to Cajalco Hill as the source of it.

Corona is one of the most residential cities in the Inland Empire, but also has a large industrial portion on the northern half. It is also well known for attracting major business, including the headquarters of companies such as Fender Musical Instruments Corporation, Monster Beverage Corporation, and supercar manufacturer Saleen.

Corona was once recognized as the “Lemon Capital of the World”. In honor to that, the Corona Heritage Park & Museum (a park with vintage buildings, city heritage displays, gardens, an arts colony and event space), presents the lemon’s former role in the local economy.

Corona Lemon Festival is celebrated once a year and includes a local fine art exhibition and allows crafters to show-off their work, and an old-fashioned “bake-off,” with lemon related recipes as the obvious theme. The festival reintroduced the “Miss Lemon Festival” pageant, as well. It also holds other attractions such as a “Best Dressed Pets” contest, and “Restaurant Row,” for sampling of Corona’s local cuisine.

Corona was established as a town by the South Riverside Land and Water Company.  The water rights were secured by Temescal Creek, its tributaries and Lee Lake. At that time, Dams and pipelines were built to carry the water to the colony. In 1889, the Temescal Water Company was incorporated, to supply water for the new colony.

Mining also remains as much of the history of Corona. Mining has been a major industry in and around Corona, in fact, is one of only six cities in the state of California that still has mining operations within its boundaries.

In 1860, the Temescal Mining Company was born, and despite their history and issues, mining operations have been thriving in Corona longer than any other industry. In 1961, the magazine Mines and Mineral Deposits of the Corona South Quadrangle, listed dozens of mining operations, including clay used in local tile and pipe manufacturing; rock products used for concrete, composite roofing shingles, dimensional stone and decomposed granite; sand and silica for construction, foundries and glass making; gypsum, limestone, mineral paints, lead, zinc, silver, and even dustings of gold.

Irrefutably, not all of that was gold, but for over 150 years, excavation of the firmament has produced valuable products for Corona’s economy and jobs for uncountable families in the city of Corona and its surroundings.

In 1876, the railroad passed through the Corona city area. It commenced as Pacific Electric Line, PE was a subsidiary of The Southern Pacific railroad, later purchased by Union Pacific railroad, and they were a major contributor to the growth of the Corona area. The train ran in the median of Magnolia Avenue, a major arterial street that runs southwest from Riverside to Corona

The Southern Pacific railroad has a history of being solicited to appear at Court several times, due to the use of asbestos-containing chemicals and materials in their workplaces that causes asbestos-related diseases for their employees when exposed, or for their employees’ spouses and family members.
