The Southern Pacific built a line from Mojave, California through Needles that later became part of the Santa Fe Railroad. By 1883, it was borax that shaped the region’s economy. Mined as colemanite (calcium borate), borax was used as a preservative, as a medicine, and as a flux in enameling that allowed metals to melt at a lower temperature. It is estimated that over 9 million dollars worth of borax was taken from the Calico Mountains. Needles became a busy rail center and later became a transit hub for the automobile, when a major cross-county route passed through it. In the early 1900’s this route was known as the National Old Trails Road. In 1926 it became U.S. Highway 66. The road was a major thoroughfare in the 1930’s for migrants fleeing the Dust bowl, and later for those coming to California for employment in war-time industries. Also known as the “Main Street of America” and the “Mother Road” the road was bypassed by Interstate Highway System in 1973, contributing to the economic decline of Needles and many other towns. The Route 66 Mother Road Museum is located in the town, and contains photographs and artifacts of the iconic road. Today, Needles is at the junction of Interstate 15, Interstate 40 and State Highway 58.

The establishment of the Mojave Anti-Aircraft Range in the 1940’s helped contribute to Needles’s growth. Now known as the Fort Irwin National Training Center, it is a major training center for the United States military, located 37 miles northeast of Needles, in the Calico Mountains of San Bernardino County. In 1958 the Goldstone Tracking Station was established in the Mojave, near Needles. The complex, now called the Gladstone Deep Space Communications Complex, is used to communicate with spacecraft and satellites. Operated by NASA’s Jet Propulsion Laboratory, the location was selected because the remote desert location was far from from power lines and free of interference from commercial transmitters.
