UNION CITY, CALIFORNIA OVERVIEW
Union City is a diverse and multicultural city in Alameda County, in the San Francisco Bay Area of northern California. Union City was founded in 1850 by John and William Horner, and was named after their Sacramento River Steamship, “The Union.” In an effort to keep Hayward from incorporating the towns of Alvarado and Decoto, in 1959 Union City was formed, combining the two communities. Today, the city has approximately 75,000 residents
Long before the Spanish arrived in California, thousands of native Ohlone inhabited the lands near what is now known as Union City, sustained by the temperate climate and plentiful acorns, wild game and fish.
In 1959, Union City was created by combining the towns of Decoto and Alvarado. The town of Alvardo was originally two smaller towns, the original Union City and New Haven. John Horner started Union City, and named it for his steamship “The Union”. Henry Smith founded New Haven, nearly a mile away, and over time, the two towns eventually merged. Alvarado was the first county seat of Alameda County Several years later, the Decoto brothers, Erza, Aldolphus, and John bought several hundred acres of land, creating the town that was to bear their name.
In 1858, a local businessman, Ebenezer Dyer imported sugar beet seed from Germany and planted 150 acres. The plants thrived in the California climate and soil. He established the first successful sugar beet mill in the United States in what is now Union City. In its first year of production, the California Beet Sugar Company processed 293 tons of beet sugar, reducing our dependence on imported sugar.
Tom Kitayama was Union City’s first and longest-serving mayor. Just 14 years after the end of World War II, Kitayama made history as first Japanese-American to hold elected office in California.
Kitayama was a successful businessman and the head of a multi million-dollar empire with 16 wholesale outlets for fresh-cut flowers around the country. The Kitayama Brothers Nursery in Union City at one time occupied over than 50 acres, but has since been subdivided for housing. Under 32 years of Mayor Kitayama, Union City’s population grew from roughly 5,000 to 50,000 residents and was transformed from a small town into a thriving city.
