SANTEE, CALIFORNIA OVERVIEW
Santee is a city in Southern California, in the Eastern Part of San Diego County. The 2022, U.S. Census Bureau estimates that Santee’s population is 59,051. Santee is 14 miles from the city of San Diego, 18 miles from the Pacific Ocean, about 125 miles from Los Angeles and 22 miles from the U.S.-Mexican border.
Santee and San Diego County are home to five Native American groups: the Luiseno, Cahuilla, Cupeno, Kumeyaay and Northern Diegueno. The Kumeyaay people were generally in the Santee area and they include the Diegueno, Tapai, and Ipai . When the Spaniards arrived in 1769, there were nearly 20,000 Kumeyaay natives living in San Diego County. The Kumeyaay people had a village Sinyeweche in the Santee area.
Santee is16.72 square miles. The town of Santee lies on part of Rancho El Cajon. The San Diego River runs right through the town. Santee was founded in the mid-1800s. Jenny Blodgett and her first husband George A. Cowles were part of the original founders of the town. Santee was originally named Cowelston after Jenny Blodgett’s first husband. After his passing, she married Milton Santee. Jenny Blodgett was granted permission to operate the new post office in town with Santee’s name. Shortly afterwards the residents changed the town’s name from Cowelston to Santee.
The gold rush in 1849, and the new transcontinental railroad transformed Santee from a rural settlement to a flourishing town. In 1934, the United States Marine Corps developed Camp Elliott in San Diego but a portion of the Camp was on the southeast portion of Santee.
Camp Elliott became a Marine Corps training Center and in little more than a year the Camp trained and sent more than 50,000 officers and soldiers to combat zones. In 1944, the Marines relocated to Camp Pendleton in Northern San Diego County and control of Camp Elliott was turned over to the Navy. Camp Elliott was closed in 1960. However, after World War II, many California cities, including Santee experienced a surge in its population. In the 1970’s Santee experienced another surge in its population.
Today, Santee is a suburban community just outside of San Diego and is known for its wide open space and is a popular area to hike, mountain bike, swim, rock-climb, fish, golf and enjoy free concerts and festivals.
