COLTON, CALIFORNIA OVERVIEW
The city of Colton is in Southern California, in San Bernardino County. It is 3.4 miles from San Bernardino city, 20.6 miles from Ontario, 52.4 miles from Palm Springs and 63.3 miles from Los Angeles, California. According to the United States Census Bureau’s 2022 data, Colton’s population is estimated at 53,918 residents.
The indigenous Native Americans in the Colton region were the Tongva, Serrano and Cahuilla Tribes who lived in the region thousands of years before the Spanish Missionaries arrived. Some Tongva descendants prefer the more historically accurate name of Kizh in relation to the native tribe that inhabited the Colton area. Colton lies on the site of an ancient Tongva village called Homhoangna.
Colton also lies on part of two old Mexican land grants. Colton is situated on parts of Rancho Jurupa granted by Governor Juan B. Alvarado, to Juan Bandini in 1838, and Rancho San Bernardino granted to José del Carmen Lugo, José María Lugo, Vicente Lugo, and Diego Sepulveda, in 1842.
Colton is a town built by the railroad industry. Colton is named after David D. Colton, a Vice President of the Southern Pacific Railroad Company. Colton, is strategically located in California and is known as the Hub of the Inland Empire. In 1882, the California Southern Rail Road built the Colton crossing to cross the Southern Pacific Railroad tracks.
In 1883, the Colton Crossing construction created a bitter conflict between the Southern Pacific Transportation Company and, the Topeka and Santa Fe Railway about expanding the tracks so that both east-west and north-south rail lines crossed in Colton at the same intersection.
Well-known lawman Virgil Earp and the then California Governor Robert Waterman were involved in a stand-off regarding the construction of the additional rail line. Both lines were finally constructed leaving the trains heading in one direction to wait in long lines for the trains to clear the junction before the trains in the opposite direction could cross the intersection.
Colton is recognized as one of the busiest railway junctions in the United States, controlling most of the rail traffic into and out of Southern California. Used by BNSF Railway (BNSF) and Union Pacific Railroad, as well as for commuter services by Metrolink and Amtrak, the Colton Crossing serviced more than 110 trains daily in 2008. However, the crossing’s facilities were not built to handle that volume of traffic. As one of the main shipment corridors for the regional transportation of goods from the Ports of Los Angeles and Long Beach, the Colton Crossing was responsible for cargo from the largest combined harbor in the United States.
From its initial construction in 1883, the Colton Crossing design created a massive bottleneck for the freight rail industry and the Colton community. Idling trains, cars and people waited for hours to cross the busy intersection. In 2013, the Union Pacific Railroad built a flyover structure to alleviate the bottleneck created at the intersection of the Union Pacific Railroad and the Burlington Northern & Santa Fe Railway tracks.
When the railroad came to the Colton area a proper town was laid out in a conventional grid pattern. The railroad transported agricultural goods, including citrus from the farms surrounding Colton. After World War II, there was an explosive population boom in Colton and residential building began and continued through the 1970s and 1980s.
Today, Colton is a purposefully positioned metropolitan city. Colton has a diverse population, a large residential community and is home to numerous transportation based businesses. Interstate 10 and 215, provides easy access to Los Angeles, Palm Springs and the Inland Empire.
