West Sacramento Mesothelioma

WEST SACRAMENTO, CALIFORNIA OVERVIEW

West Sacramento, is a city located in Yolo County, California, alongside the Sacramento River.  The 2022, U.S. Census estimates West Sacramento’s population as 55,064 residents.  West Sacramento is about 4 miles from Sacramento, 36.9 miles from Travis Air Force Base, 57 miles from Mare Island Naval Shipyard and 84 miles from San Francisco.

The Sacramento area is the Tribal land of the Nisenan people.  The Indigenous residents of the land near and around West Sacramento were the Patwin, Wintun and Wintu people.  The Nisenan people lived in the Sacramento area for thousands of years before the Europeans arrived.  They were hunter gathers and ate acorns, pine nuts, blackberries, juniper berries, Indian potatoes, sweet potatoes, game and fish.

The Nisenan population was decimated by European diseases, slavery, armed conflict and forced evacuation to reservations or ranchos.  Today the Wilton Rancheria is the only federally recognized tribe in Sacramento County.

West Sacramento sits on a part of a Mexican land grant awarded to Jan Lows de Swart (also known as John Schwartz), by Mexico’s Governor Manuel Micheltorena in 1844.  John Schwartz named his land grant Rancho Nueva Flandria after the Flanders region in Belgium, his previous home. In 1844, before the Gold Rush, John Schwartz and his brother established a Salmon fishing business, raised livestock and grew potatoes and melons on Rancho Nueva Flandria.  In 1846, John Schwartz sold 600 acres of Rancho Nueva Flandria to James McDowell and his wife Mary.

In 1848, the Gold Rush pandemonium in California brought numerous new residents and prospectors to the area. In 1849, after her husband died, Mary McDowell mapped out 160 acres of her property and sold lots, establishing an area she named the Town of Washington.  The West Sacramento area grew exponentially with hotels, saloons, and shops.  In 1859, The California Steam Navigation Company was founded in the area which successfully transported people and goods throughout California.

West Sacramento in Yolo County is separated from the city of Sacramento and Sacramento County by the Sacramento River.  West Sacramento lies on the west side of the Sacramento River and consisted of at least three unincorporated communities that settled as towns in the 1800s.  In the 1900s, the three unincorporated communities were known as Bryte, Broderick (formerly The Town of Washington), and West Sacramento.  These communities united and incorporated as the new city of West Sacramento in 1987.

In 1963, the Port of Sacramento inaugurated a deep water port for commercial businesses in West Sacramento.  In 2008, the Port of Sacramento changed its name to the Port of West Sacramento.  The Port of West Sacramento has supported agricultural, raw materials and construction businesses throughout Northern California.  West Sacramento is a leader in the area in the food industry.

Today, West Sacramento is a diverse riverfront urban community north of San Francisco.  According to the recent census it consists of 42% White alone (Non-Hispanic), 33.7% Latino and 12.3% Asian.   West Sacramento has well preserved open spaces and trails, as well as a variety of water sports including boating and fishing.
