NOVATO, CALIFORNIA OVERVIEW
Novato, is a city in Northern California in Marin County. The town of Novato was incorporated in 1960. The 2022, U.S. Census estimates Novato’s population at 52,184 residents. Novato is home to the former Hamilton Air Force Base. Novato is 28 miles from San Francisco, 32 miles from Oakland, 22 miles from Vallejo, and 21 miles from the former Mare Island Naval Shipyard.
Various Miwok Tribes lived in Northen California for thousands of years before the Europeans arrived in 1775. The indigenous residents in Marin County and the Novato area were the Coast Miwok tribe. The Coast Miwok were the second-largest tribe of the Miwok people. The Miwoks had numerous villages throughout Marin and southern Sonoma Counties, including the Chokeche village in present day Novato.
The Franciscan Friars at Mission San Rafael baptized many Coast Miwok natives, as well as members of the Pomo and Ohlone tribes. Due to European diseases, military conflict and settlers’ purges, the Miwok tribes were decimated and their land was stolen.
Novato sits on part of the 8,871 acre Rancho Novato, granted by Mexican Governor Juan Alvarado to Fernando Feliz in 1839. It also sits on part of the 8,878 acre Rancho Corte Madera de Novato granted to John (Juan) Martin in 1840.
In 1843, Governor Alvarado granted Rancho Olompali to Camilo Ynitia, a Coast Miwok Indian. Camilo Ynitia was the son of the last Miwok chief and the only indigenous tribal member to receive a Mexican land grant in Marin County. Olompali which is just north of Novato, is the site of a large prehistoric Coast Miwok village that is now Olompali State Historic Park.
On February 2, 1848, Mexico ceded California to the United States pursuant to the Treaty of Guadalupe Hidalgo. In 1857, Rancho Novato was eventually sold to Francis DeLong and Joseph Sweetser. They planted vineyards and 44,000 fruit trees including apples, pears and apricots. Their ranch was known as the largest apple orchard in the United States.
In 1879, the Northwestern Pacific Railroad came to Novato and commercial buildings sprung up around Grant Ave. In 1888, the Novato Home and Farm Company divided the land and sold parcels for development and farming. During the late-1800 and early-1900s, Novato’s economy was agriculturally based. In addition to growing and shipping apples and other fruit, the community raised cattle, had dairy farms and cheese factories.
Although Novato existed as a town since the mid-1850s, it did not incorporate as a city until January 20, 1960. Today, Novato is a bustling suburban city in Marin County and has many parks and wide open spaces. It also has easy access to San Francisco and the Greater Bay area.
