CERRITOS, CALIFORNIA OVERVIEW

Cerritos, is located in Southern California, in Los Angeles County.  According to the 2022 Census Data, the population is estimated at 47,475.  Cerritos is 9.7 miles from Anaheim, 13.6 miles from Long Beach, 19 miles from Torrance and 20 miles from Los Angeles.

The Indigenous people in the Los Angeles County area were the Tongva People. The Tongva People lived in the Southern California area for thousands of years, before Gasper de Portola’s 1769, expedition.  In 1771, The Spanish Friars founded the Mission San Gabriel Arcangel and renamed the indigenous natives as the Gabrielino (Gabrieleno), due to the natives proximity to the San Gabriel Arcangel Mission. The Spanish priests used the Tongva Indians to work the land and add great wealth to the missions.

In 1784, Spain’s Governor Pedro Fages granted the 167,000 acre Rancho Los Nietos to Manuel Nieto.  Rancho Los Nietos was one of the first Spanish land grants in Alta California.  In 1821, Mexico gained independence from Spain.  In 1834, the Mexican Governor José Figueroa granted Manuel Nieto’s heir’s request to break-up Rancho Los Nietos into five parts.

Juan Jose Nieto, the eldest son of Manuel Nietos was given the 28,027 acre Rancho Los Alamitos and the 48,806-acre Rancho Los Coyotes.  Manuela Nieto (daughter of Manuel Nieto) and her husband Guillermo Cota received the 27,054-acre Rancho Los Cerritos.  After California was ceded to the United States pursuant to the 1848, Treaty of Guadalupe Hidalgo both Rancho Los Coyotes and Rancho Los Cerritos were sold to other parties.  Cerritos sits on part of both Rancho Los Coyotes and Rancho Los Cerritos.

From the 1830s to 1840s, the future Cerritos area was primarily cattle ranch land.  From 1848 through 1850, the Gold Rush provided a boom to the cattle ranches because the gold miners paid top dollar for beef.  In the early 1900s, Henry E. Huntington launched the Pacific Electric Railway, known as the Red Cars which extended to the surrounding communities outside Los Angeles.

The Red Cars allowed farmers to commute and transport goods to Los Angeles.  The Red Cars provided street cars on a 24 hour/7 days a week basis.  The Pacific Electric Railway extension to the small towns was a population expansion for the towns along the Red Car routes. In the 1900s, the cattle ranches gave way to agricultural crops and dairy farms.  Dairy farms thrived and sugar beets, strawberries, beans, barley and alfalfa were planted.

World War II brought many workers into Southern California for factory and shipyards jobs which assisted the war effort.  World War II also brought many service men and other personnel into the area creating a population boom.  In the early 1950s, the city of Artesia was rapidly expanding and the nearby dairy farmers feared being annexed by Artesia.  On April 24, 1956, the dairy community voted to incorporate the area as the new city of Dairy Valley.  At the time of incorporation Dairy Valley was home to 3,500 people and 32,000 cows, 83,000 chickens, 9,600 turkeys and 105 acres of crops.

After many legal challenges and disagreements with its neighboring towns, Dairy Valley adjusted its boundaries and by 1957, Dairy Valley settled its border issues.  At that time Dairy Valley possessed 400 dairies and produced more than $80 million in milk product sales each year.

However, due to increased land values and taxes, Dairy Valley residents held a Special Election on March 2, 1965, and changed the zoning laws from agricultural to residential.  The zoning change allowed residential development in Dairy Valley.  On January 10, 1967, Dairy Valley changed its name to Cerritos.

The first Cerritos General Plan, adopted on October 27, 1971, laid out a vision for a park-like community with acres of green open space, beautiful neighborhoods, services and shops close to homes, and a smart mix of commercial and industrial development.

Cerritos is a vibrant, diverse, fast growing city in Los Angeles County. It has a large number of Filipino, Korean, Taiwanese, Indian and Chinese families.  Cerritos constructed a Sculpture Garden that includes a sculpture memorializing the August 31, 1986, Aeroméxico Flight 498 tragedy.
