In 1821, Mexico gained independence from Spain. In 1834, the Mexican Governor José Figueroa granted Manuel Nieto’s heir’s request to break-up Rancho Los Nietos into five parts.
Juan Jose Nieto, the eldest son of Manuel Nietos was given the 28,027 acre Rancho Los Alamitos and the 48,806-acre Rancho Los Coyotes. Manuela Nieto (daughter of Manuel Nieto) and her husband Guillermo Cota received the 27,054-acre Rancho Los Cerritos. After California was ceded to the United States pursuant to the 1848, Treaty of Guadalupe Hidalgo both Rancho Los Coyotes and Rancho Los Cerritos were sold to other parties. Cerritos sits on part of both Rancho Los Coyotes and Rancho Los Cerritos.
From the 1830s to 1840s, the future Cerritos area was primarily cattle ranch land. From 1848 through 1850, the Gold Rush provided a boom to the cattle ranches because the gold miners paid top dollar for beef. In the early 1900s, Henry E. Huntington launched the Pacific Electric Railway, known as the Red Cars which extended to the surrounding communities outside Los Angeles.
The Red Cars allowed farmers to commute and transport goods to Los Angeles. The Red Cars provided street cars on a 24 hour/7 days a week basis. The Pacific Electric Railway extension to the small towns was a population expansion for the towns along the Red Car routes. In the 1900s, the cattle ranches gave way to agricultural crops and dairy farms. Dairy farms thrived and sugar beets, strawberries, beans, barley and alfalfa were planted.

The zoning change allowed residential development in Dairy Valley. On January 10, 1967, Dairy Valley changed its name to Cerritos.
