POWAY, CALIFORNIA OVERVIEW
Poway is a city in Southern California, in San Diego County. The 2022, U.S. Census Bureau estimates that Poway’s population is 48,078. Poway is 22.6 miles from the city of San Diego, 24 miles from Santa Ana, about 115 miles from Los Angeles and 39 miles from the U.S.-Mexican border.
San Diego County and the city of Poway are home to several Native American groups: the Luiseno, Cahuilla, Cupeno, and Kumeyaay. The Kumeyaay people lived in the Poway area and are also known as the Tapai, and Ipai. Historically, the Kumeyaay people were named the Diegueno, by the Spaniards, due to the Native Americans proximity to the San Diego de Alcala Mission. Kumeyaay translates as “People of the West.”
When the Spaniards arrived in 1769, there were nearly 20,000 Kumeyaay natives living in San Diego County. The name “Poway” is a Kumeyaay word meaning arrowhead or watering hole. Today, the Kumeyaay people operate six casinos on their reservations.
In the 1800s, many settlers homesteaded in California including in the Poway Valley. The Homestead Act of 1862, was a radical scheme that gave public land to private citizens. Approximately, 270 million acres, or 10% of the area of the United States was claimed and settled under this Act. The Homesteading Act gave homesteaders who met the requirements 160 acres of land.
It is believed that Phillip Crosthwaite, an Irishman, was the first white homesteader who established a ranch and built his home in the Poway area in 1859. More homesteader’s arrived in the valley, including Doctor Louis Hilleary in 1882. Doctor Louis Hilleary became the town’s first doctor. In 1870, Poway had the only post office between San Bernardino and San Diego.
From the mid-1800s, through the 1900s, Poway thrived on ranching and farming. Poway produced alfalfa, hay, pears, grapes, peaches, olives, vineyards and dairy products. However, the land was subject to periods of severe drought which affected its growth as a town.
In 1954, the residents voted to form the Poway Municipal Water District, bringing water into the area from the Colorado Aqueduct. Also, in 1957, the Pomerado County Water District was organized to provide a sewer system which further opened the area up for residential growth. In 1958, construction began on tract homes that were ultimately sold as Poway Valley Homes. Poway’s population grew resulting in the development of new schools, businesses and roads.
From 1970-1972, Poway built Lake Poway, a dam and reservoir to store and supply water to the town and provide recreational activities for the town. In 1980, the residents voted to incorporate the town into the city of Poway. Poway’s motto is the “City in the Country. The town has city amenities but also provided for ample open spaces for its residents. The Poway Dam provides year round fishing as well as an adjacent hillside park. The lake has a 2.75 mile trail that circles the reservoir. Today, Poway is a suburban community just outside of San Diego. It has a diverse population with 62.7% white, 13.4% Asian and 16.6% Latino.
