Antelope is located in Northern California, in Sacramento County. Antelope’s northern border is the boundary between Sacramento County and Placer County. The 2020 United States Census, registers Antelope’s population as 48,733. Antelope is situated 7 miles from Roseville, 15 miles from the city of Sacramento, 95 miles from Oakland, and about 101 miles from San Francisco, California.
The Sacramento County area was home to the Nisenan people. Many tribes lived throughput Sacramento and the central valley, including the Southern Maidu people to the North, the Valley and Plains Miwok/ Me-Wuk Peoples to the south of the American River, and the Patwin Wintun Peoples to the west of the Sacramento River. The indigenous people in the Antelope area were the Maidu people. The Maidu villages extended from the Sacramento Valley all the way to the Sierra Nevada Mountains. The Maidu were hunters and gatherers and subsisted on acorns, nuts, berries, wild animals and fish.
In 1832, European trappers in the area brought malaria and other diseases that severely affected the Maidu people and other Indian tribes in the area, because the indigenous people had no immunity to European diseases. It is estimated that 50 to 75% of the native tribes perished from these diseases. In conjunction with the 1848, California Gold Rush, miners, settlers and the military displaced the remaining tribes.
The Antelope area sits at the base of the Sierra Nevada Mountains and has a total of 8.831 square miles of land. In the mid-1800s, Antelope was a farm and ranch community. Many of the early settlers raised and bred cattle, had dairy farms, grew crops, including grains and almonds. In the late 1800s, Antelope became a railroad town located along the Central Pacific Railroad line. In 1880, the city’s population was about 400 people, consisting mostly of railroad workers.
Antelope’s Post office and first store began in 1877. The local farmers began construction of the Antelope Great Hall in 1915. In 1993, the residents voted to structure their territory. In 1993, the town’s official boundaries were established, and the unincorporated area was formally named Antelope. On July 1, 1994, the United States Post office formally recognized Antelope with its own postmark stamp.
Antelope is an unincorporated area north of Sacramento city. Antelope is a Census Designated Place (CDP) and part of the Sacramento-Arden-Arcade-Roseville Metropolitan Statistical Area. A CDP, is the statistical equivalent of an incorporated city. A census-designated place does not have permanent boundaries like a city and there is not a city council, within the area’s borders. In a census-designated place, law enforcement and firefighting services usually fall upon the county that the unincorporated area is in. Pursuant to the 2022, United States Census data, the estimated combined population in the Sacramento-Arden-Arcade-Roseville Metropolitan Area was 2.39 million residents.
On April 28, 1973, at around 7:45 a.m., eighteen Department of Defense boxcars which contained 250-pound (Mark 81) bombs were parked on the west end of Track No. 7 of the Southern Pacific railyard in Roseville, CA. Each boxcar carried 336 unfused bombs loaded in 28 pallets. Each pallet contained 12 bombs. The Southern Pacific yard workers saw flames coming from a ruptured roof of one of the eighteen boxcars. The bombs exploded causing the other seventeen boxcars to erupt in flames. The fire and explosions continued until 4:00 p.m. the next day. Antelope suffered heavy damages. Nine structures were destroyed and eleven structures were heavily damaged. Approximately, 350 people and rail employees were injured, mostly with cuts from broken glass.
Antelope’s small downtown area was destroyed. Antelope was restructured as a planned community resulting in newly constructed single family homes and apartments. Antelope has a diverse community. According to the 2020 census Antelope’s population reflects 64.1% white, 11.2% Asian, 10.4% African American and 14.6% Latino. Antelope has access to ten parks, including Antelope Park with three pools, a variety of baseball and softball fields and golfing. The parks are maintained by the Sunrise Recreation and Park District.
