In 1784, Spain’s Governor Pedro Fages granted the 167,000 acre Rancho Los Nietos to Manuel Nieto. Rancho Los Nietos was one of the first Spanish land grants in Alta California. In 1821, Mexico gained independence from Spain. In 1834, the Mexican Governor José Figueroa granted Manuel Nieto’s heir’s request to break-up Rancho Los Nietos into five parts.
Juan Jose Nieto, the eldest son of Manuel Nietos was given the 28,027 acre Rancho Los Alamitos and the 48,806-acre Rancho Los Coyotes. Manuela Nieto (daughter of Manuel Nieto) and her husband Guillermo Cota received the 27,054-acre Rancho Los Cerritos. After California was ceded to the United States pursuant to the 1848, Treaty of Guadalupe Hidalgo both Rancho Los Coyotes and Rancho Los Cerritos were sold to other parties. La Mirada sits on part of Rancho Los Coyotes.
In the late 1800s, Andrew McNally purchased over 2,200 acres of Rancho Los Coyotes from Abel Stearns Rancho Trust. Mr. McNally was a printer and mapmaker from Chicago, who ultimately founded the Rand McNally Publishing Company. McNally established a ranch and built his home on the property which he named Windermere. McNally planted olive, lemon and orange groves. He developed an olive oil plant to process the oil and built a railroad station on Stage road to ship his fruit and olive oil throughout the country.
McNally wanted to create a completely planned community of Country Gentlemen and advertised 20 acre parcels of land for sale. He sold some parcels but the planned community did not come to fruition. In 1901, McNally turned his property over to his daughter and son in law, Edwin Neff and their ranch flourished for 40 years.
In 1953, the Neff family sold 2,218 acres to Pioneer and Land Realty Company of Los Angeles but the Neff family retained 10 acres surrounding the Neff house. In 1954, Louis Halper purchased 2,100 acres for 8 million dollars. Halper launched a planned community construction project and by 1956, 13 tracts, 7,800 homes were built and mostly sold. By 1960, La Mirada grew from 100 homes to over 8,000 homes.
On March 23, 1960, the city was incorporated as Mirada Hills. However, Andrew McNally introduced Proposition T, for the November 1960 ballot which proposed to change the city’s name back to La Mirada. The proposition passed with 80% of the vote. The La Mirada name change was certified on December 15, 1960.
La Mirada sits on the border between Los Angeles County and Orange County. On the Los Angeles County side, La Mirada is bordered by the cities of Santa Fe Springs, Cerritos, and unincorporated East Whittier and South Whittier.
