At the beginning of World War II, the Alameda Works was modernized and expanded, and became the Bethlehem Alameda Shipyard. At the height of the war, the shipyard covered over 80 acres, and employed 6,200 men and women. Ten troopships were constructed and over 1,000 damaged vessels were repaired. The shipyard was closed in 1956.
In 1940, the Alameda Naval air station opened, employing 200 military and civilian personnel. Eventually, the air station included two 8,000 ft. runways, three seaplane ramps and a lighted seadrome. The USS Ranger, USS Midway, USS Coral Sea and USS Hancock were all based in Alameda. With 300 buildings and 30 miles of roads it remained an important naval base through the end of the Cold War. The base was used for maintenance until its closing in 1997.
Today, the World War II era aircraft carrier USS Hornet is maintained as a floating museum at Alameda Point.
