ALISO VIEJO, CALIFORNIA OVERVIEW
Aliso Viejo, is in Orange County, California. It is about 6 miles from Mission Viejo, 18.7 miles from Santa Ana, 50 miles from Los Angeles, and 74 miles from San Diego. According to the 2022 United States Census Bureau its population is estimated as 51,221. Like Mission Viejo, Aliso Viejo was specifically designed as a suburban community.
Orange County was home to the Tongva and Acjachemen Indian tribes. It is estimated that the Acjachemen population resided in Orange County for roughly 10,000 years. When the Spaniards arrived they renamed them the Gabrieleno and the Juaneno Indians after the San Gabriel Arcangel Mission and the San Juan Capistrano Mission. The Aliso Creek was the borderline between the Acjachemen and the Tongva Indians.
Today, Native American descendants prefer their original names Tongva (or Kizh), and Acjachemen and repudiate the older, Spanish-mission-related designations. Although, the Acjachemen tribe are recognized in California, the Acjachemen are not a Federally recognized tribe. The lack of Federal recognition has been a hindrance in the preservation and restoration of the Acjachemen’s cultural history.
In 1848, all of California was ceded to the United States pursuant to the Treaty of Guadalupe Hidalgo. The city of Aliso Viejo was built on part of an old Mexican land grant. In 1842, Mexican Governor Juan B. Alvarado gave Juan Avila a 13,316-acre land grant named Rancho Niguel. In 1865, Juan Avila sold his property to John Forster. Through subsequent sales Lewis F. Moulton purchased Rancho Niguel in 1895. With the purchase of additional land, Moulton’s Ranch eventually encompassed 22,000 acres.
In 1976, The Mission Viejo Company purchased 6,600 acres of Moulton Ranch, for a planned community, that included Aliso Viejo. The idea for Aliso Viejo was to feature neighborhoods that mix homes, workplaces, stores and services, as well as a transit-friendly, energy-conscious and land-conserving community. As part of the deal 2,600 acres were given to Orange County as part of the Aliso and Wood Canyons Wilderness Park and for the development of additional parks, recreation, schools and community facilities. In 1979, Orange County approved the master plan for the designed community. By March of 1982 the first residential units were offered for sale.
On July 1, 2001, Aliso Viejo was incorporated and became Orange County’s 34th city. The name Aliso Viejo translates from Spanish as Old Sycamore. The city’s slogan is “Aliso Viejo-Experience It All.” In 1990, Aliso Viejo had 7,600 residents, in 2000, it had 32,000 residents, and today Aliso Viejo has 51,221 residents.
In 2009, Forbes Magazine named Aliso Viejo as one of the “Top 25 Towns to live Well.” Some of the Top employers in Aliso Viejo are the United Parcel Service, Pacific Life, UST Global, Quest Software, Covenant Care and Walmart.
