ANAHEIM, CALIFORNIA OVERVIEW
Anaheim spans 46 square miles and has over 340,000 residents, making it the largest city in Orange County, in Southern California. It is also the wealthiest, with over $1 billion in city assets.
Anaheim was founded in 1857. The community was originally named Annaheim, with “Anna” referring to the Santa Ana River and “heim” meaning home in German.
Anaheim began as a community of vineyards, and for a brief period of time, was California’s premier wine growing region. A Los Angeles surveyor, George Hansen, brought together a group of fifty German colonists who created the agricultural colony, the “Los Angeles Vineyard Society” in what is now known as Anaheim. The 1and was purchased for roughly $2 an acre. Hansen is known today as the “Father of Anaheim,” and built a small wood framed home that is still standing. Known today as the “Mother Colony House”, it is the oldest museum in Orange County, and is on the national Register of Historic Places. The colony’s first vintage was in 1860 with 2,000 gallons produced. By 1864, 300,000 gallons of wine were produced. By 1883, the German colony had 47 wineries and scores of vineyards, yielding over than a million gallons of wine. Including grapes destined for the table and for raisins, it was estimated that there were 10,000 acres of vineyards planted in the Santa Ana Valley.
By the late 1880’s, the crop was decimated by a variety of illnesses, and the area was replanted with oranges and walnut groves.
Farmers hired Yaqui Indians from Mexico to dig ditches, then brought in Chinese laborers to help in the fields and to build wine cellars and casks. By 1890, the Chinese made up nearly 75% of California’s agricultural work force. Anaheim, along with Santa Ana and Orange had their own distinct “Chinatowns.” Anaheim’s Chinatown was located along Chartres St., between Lemon and Anaheim Blvd, and included grocers, laundries and other businesses. By 1876, about a sixth of Anaheim’s population was Chinese.
In the 1950’s, the economy of Anaheim took a turn away from agriculture, and never looked back. In 1953, Walt Disney bought a 160-acre former orange grove, to begin building his vision of a family-friendly amusement park, Originally named “The Mickey Mouse Park,” then “Disneylandia” and eventually “Disneyland,” the park opened on July 17, 1955. When it first opened, visitors could explore the park for an admission fee of $1, with ride tickets costing between 10 and 30 cents. Today, the park is an international tourist destination and covers over 510 acres. An independent report concluded that the park generated $5.7 billion annually for the local economy, and generated over $370 million in state and local taxes. The Disneyland Resort is Orange County’s largest employer with 28,000 “cast members.”
The Anaheim Convention Center and Arena is the largest convention center on the West Coast, with over 1 million square feet of exhibit space. Edison International Field, originally known as Anaheim Stadium draws more than 3.9 million visitors annually to the Angel’s baseball games, events and concerts. The stadium will host host softball and baseball events for the 2028 Summer Olympics.
