In 1884, George C. Egan bought parcels of land from the Southern Pacific railroad around Summit Station. He built a store, a post office and plotted out the town of San Gorgonio. In 1886, The Southern California Investment Company purchased Egan’s San Gorgonio town and renamed the town Beaumont. Beaumont translates from French to beautiful mountain. In 1907, Kenneth Smoot and Claredon B. Eyer bought land in Beaumont and began developing the land. Beaumont was incorporated as a city on November 18, 1912.
