CAMARILLO, CALIFORNIA OVERVIEW
Camarillo is located on a Coastal plain between the ocean and the mountains in California, in Ventura County. According to the U.S. Census Bureau, Camarillo’s 2022, estimated population is 70,282. Camarillo is 9 miles from the Pacific Ocean, 43 miles from Santa Barbara and 51 miles from Los Angeles. Camarillo was incorporated as a city on October 22, 1964.
The traditional territories of Native Americans living in Los Angeles and Ventura Counties were comprised of at least six Tribes: the Chumash, Fernandeño, Tataviam, Kitanemuk, Gabrieleno, and Serrano. In the Camarillo and the Oxnard Plain area it was the Chumash tribe that lived in the region for hundreds of years before any Spanish explorers arrived in the area in the 1500s.
The Chumash had a village near Point Mugu. Ancient artifacts have been found in the area and there are pictographs in the caves near the Conejo Grade. The Spaniards, called the Chumash Indians “Ventureno.” Current descendants of the Chumash Indians are known as the Barbareno or Ventureno Indians. .
In 1837, the Mexican Government awarded Jose Pedro Ruiz a 10,000 acre land grant and he created Rancho Calleguas. Ruiz sold Rancho Calleguas to Juan Camarillo. Juan Camarillo’s sons Adolfo and Juan eventually founded the town of Camarillo on this land grant.
Adolfo Camarillo (1864-1958) was a rancher, a businessman and a civic leader. He sat on many boards, donated 50 acres to build Camarillo high school, and gave Southern Pacific Railroad the right to lay tracks across his land resulting in Camarillo Station. He also, gave the right of way to the State of California, on the eastern edge of his land to widen highway 101 for the Conejo Grade.
In the 1800 and early 1900s, the town’s economy was primarily agriculture. In 1932, the Camarillo State Mental hospital opened which provided services for tuberculosis and mental health, as well as employment for the community. The hospital closed in the 1990s. The Camarillo State Hospital site became the California State University Channel Islands (CSUCI) which opened its doors in 2002.
During World War II, several military facilities, including the Oxnard Army Air Field, the Naval Air Facility at Point Magu and the Seabee Base at Port Hueneme brought military and civilian workers to Camarillo. However, it was difficult to travel to Camarillo because of the narrow and dangerous ascent though the Conejo Grade. The difficult thoroughfare changed in the 1950’s when travel to Los Angeles became effortless after the Ventura Freeway (Highway 101) was completed.
In the 1960s large companies moved to Camarillo like 3M and Harbor Freight Tools bringing their own personnel and creating jobs in the town. Camarillo’s population boomed and it became a residential suburban community with residents commuting to surrounding counties for work.
