By 1880, settlers had begun buying portions of the rancho from Yorba’s heirs, and the town of Fairview was established. A flood in 1889 washed out the railroad servicing Fairview, and the town fell to ruin.
Within a few years, another town known as Harper was established, named after a nearby rancher. Its first business, Ozment’s General Store contained the city’s first post office. On May 11, 1920, Harper changed its name to Costa Mesa. It was largely an agricultural community growing sweet potatoes, corn, tomatoes, strawberries, lima beans and apples.
In 1933 a magnitude 6.3 earthquake shook Costa Mesa and Orange County, killing 127 people and causing millions of dollars of damage to homes and businesses.
The population of Costa Mesa surged during the World War II years with the establishment of the 1,336 acre Santa Ana Air Base, a training center for Air Force personnel en route to the Pacific theater. The base was decommissioned in 1946, and part of the land was annexed by Costa Mesa, eventually becoming part of Orange Coast College, Costa Mesa High School and the Orange County Fairgrounds.
Today, Costa Mesa is a regional commercial, cultural and industrial center. The 3,000-seat Segerstrom Center for the Arts was built in 1985. The Segerstrom Center hosts leading dance companies, Broadway shows, special events and many innovative year-round educational programs.
