DANVILLE CALIFORNIA OVERVIEW

Danville Town (Danville) is a located in Contra Costa County, in the San Ramon Valley of Northern California. The San Ramon Valley encompasses the cities of San Ramon, Danville, part of Walnut Creek and the unincorporated towns of Alamo, Blackhawk, Camino Tassajara, and Diablo.  The United States 2023 Census Data estimates that Danville’s population is 42,999. Danville is 19 miles from Martinez, 22 miles from Benicia, 28 miles from Richmond, 22 miles from Oakland and 31 miles from San Francisco, CA.

Long before the Spanish arrived in California, the Miwok people inhabited Northern California.  The Bay Miwok lived in Contra Costa County, including the Saclan tribe that lived in the Danville area.  The Saclan tribe was recorded in Spanish Mission records as early as 1794. There were at least six Bay Miwok tribes identified by the Spanish Mission records that lived in Contra Costa County. Many native tribes were decimated by the Spanish mission system, European diseases and conflict with soldiers and settlers.

Danville sits on part of two old Mexican land grants, both called Rancho San Ramon.  The majority of Danville, sits on Rancho San Ramon (Pacheco-Castro) which was a 8917-acre Mexican land grant awarded in 1833, by Gov. José Figueroa to Mariano Castro and Bartolome Pacheco.   The Southern end of Danville sits on part of Rancho San Ramon (Amador), which was a 20,968 acre Mexican land grant also called Rancho San Ramon (Amador) and awarded in 1834, by Gov. José Figueroa to José Maria Amador.  The name Rancho San Ramon translates from Spanish into Saint Raymond’s Ranch.

Danville has had settlers and miners in the area since the mid-1800s. Danville’s early economy was based on agriculture and livestock. Farmers in the area grew wheat, barley, onions, apples plums, pears, walnuts and almonds. Many settlers also raised livestock, including cattle and sheep.

In 1854, Daniel and Andrew Inman purchased 400 acres in what is now known as old town Danville. By 1858, the community had several businesses including, a blacksmith, and a general store. The Danville post office opened in 1860. The Grange Hall was built in 1874, and still stands in old town Danville today. The Southern Pacific Railroad established a line through Danville in 1891, expanding the town’s ability to transport crops and people to other parts of California.

After World War II, Danville like most of California changed farm land into residential communities. In 1960, the new Interstate-680 freeway was built allowing easier transport to the greater Bay Area. Although Danville has been around since the mid-1800s, it formally incorporated into a town on July 1, 1982.  Its new incorporated name was Danville Town. It is one of a few incorporated municipalities that utilizes the word town in their official name, instead of city.

Danville has been named several times as the “safest town in California.” Danville is an affluent suburb in the San Francisco Bay Area. According to Business Insider and Public CEO’s Newsletter, Danville’s ZIP Code is one of the wealthiest ZIP Codes in the United States. Danville is also known as one of the most expensive real estate locations in the San Francisco Bay Area.  Danville has a small-town atmosphere but has sophisticated amenities in its town.

Danville’s location provides access to numerous outdoor spaces. The Iron Horse Regional Trail is an old rail line that has outdoor trails for pedestrians, horse riders and bicycles in the East Bay. The Iron Horse Regional Trail passes through several cities, including through Danville. Danville is close to many outdoor facilities including, Mount Diablo State Park, Las Trompas Regional Wilderness, Hap Magee Ranch Park and the Eugene O’Neill National Historic Site, which is a 158-acre National Park.
