DELANO, CALIFORNIA OVERVIEW

Delano is located in California’s Central Valley, in Kern County.  Delano is approximately 32 miles from Bakersfield, 50 miles from McKittrick, 77 miles from Fresno, and 143 miles from Los Angeles, California. The 2022 census data estimates Delano’s population at 50,843 residents.  Delano is the second-largest city in Kern County.  Delano incorporated as a city in 1915.

The Yokuts tribe historically lived in the Delano area.  There were many different Yokuts tribes that lived throughout California’s Central Valley.  The Yokuts traded and intermarried among themselves. Many Native American tribes, including the Yokuts were decimated or removed from their land by the Spanish Mission system, by European diseases and through conflict with American settlers.

On July 14, 1869, the Southern Pacific Railroad created Delano as a railroad town.  The Southern Pacific Railroad trains originated in San Francisco and terminated in Delano.  The town’s population grew with railroad workers establishing roots to build a new rail line to Bakersfield.  The Southern Pacific Railroad named the town in honor of Columbus Delano, who was the Secretary of the Interior for the United States.

The city of Delano and Kern County’s economy are agriculturally based.  In 2019, Kern County’s top five products were almonds, grapes, citrus, pistachios and milk.  Delano is well known for growing table grapes.  Many Native Americans, Chinese, Japanese, Mexican, Filipino, Black and Anglo farmworkers worked in California fields to build agrarian wealth for California’s large landowners and the agroindustry.

Delano has many important historical sites, including Forty Acres, which was the headquarters of the United Farm Workers from 1966 to 1971.  On September 8, 1965, Larry Itliong, Phillip Vera Cruz and other Filipino leaders led the Agricultural Workers Organizing Committee in a walk out from table grape farms, which became the legendary Delano grape strike.

Shortly thereafter, the National Farm Workers’ Association, led by Cesar Chavez and Dolores Huerta, joined the Agricultural Workers strike. During the strike, the two groups joined forces and formed the United Farm Workers of America.

The Delano grape strike and boycott eventually led to a nation–wide boycott of California-grown table grapes. By 1970, after strikes, boycotts, a 300 mile march, and a 25-day fast by Cesar Chávez, the UFW succeeded in reaching a collective bargaining agreement with California grape growers, affecting over 70,000 farm workers.

Today, Delano is a vibrant and diverse community.  It has many historical sites and open spaces.  It also has easy access to the Sequoia National Forest, and the California coastline.
