FAIRFIELD, CALIFORNIA OVERVIEW
Fairfield, is a city in California and was named the County Seat of Solano County in 1858. In 1903, Fairfield incorporated as a city in California. The 2021, U.S. Census estimates Fairfield’s population as 119,705 residents. Fairfield is centrally located in Northern California. Fairfield is 47 miles from San Francisco, 43 miles from Sacramento, 15 miles from Vallejo, 7 miles from Travis Air Force Base and about 19 miles from Mare Island Naval Shipyard.
The Indigenous residents of the land that is now Fairfield were the Patwin Indians, members of the Suisun Tribe. The Suisun Tribe lived in the area for over a thousand years. In 1810, Spain sent the Spanish Army, led by Gabriel Moraga to attack the Suisun Indians. In 1821, Mexico gained independence from Spain. In 1835, after combat with the Mexican army, the Native American Chief Solano, whose native name was Sem-Yeto, became allied with General Mariano Guadalupe Vallejo and assisted Mexico in conquering the other Indian tribes in the Fairfield area.
In 1835, the Mexican government awarded Chief Solano (Sen-Yeto) a land-grant named Suisun Rancho. In 1848, Mexico ceded California to the United States. The Suisun Rancho land grant was sold in 1850, to Robert Waterman. Waterman founded a settlement on the land grant in 1856, and named it Fairfield after his home town, Fairfield Connecticut.
In 1942, Travis Air Force Base was built just east of Fairfield and was initially known as the Fairfield-Suisun Army Base. Travis Air Force Base improved Fairfield’s economy, as the city rapidly grew during World War II, and housing was developed for the airmen and their families. Travis is currently home to the 60th Air Mobility Wing and is acknowledged as the busiest Air Force base in the country.
In 1957, the Monticello Dam was built which provided water to Fairfield for irrigation purposes, that increased crops, livestock, wine and beer production. Fairfield’s central location and wide-ranging transportation connections make it an attractive place to live for residents commuting in Northern California, especially residents shuttling back and forth from Sacramento or the San Francisco Bay area.
