FLORIN, CALIFORNIA OVERVIEW
Florin is located in Northern California, in Sacramento County. The 2020 United States Census, records Florin’s population as 52,388. Florin is situated 8 miles from the city of Sacramento, 66 miles from Vallejo, 68 miles from Benicia, and about 95.5 miles from San Francisco.
The indigenous people in Sacramento County, including in the Florin area were the Miwok Indians. The Plains and Sierra Miwok were once the largest group of California Miwok Indians. Their homeland included regions of the Sacramento Valley, San Joaquin Valley, and the Sierra Nevada.
In the mid-1800s, Florin was a small agrarian community on the Southern Pacific Railroad line. In the 1850s, James Rutter planted the prized winning “Florin Flame Tokay” grapes in Florin. For almost a century Florin, was the center of the Tokay grape production. In 1864, Judge E. B. Crocker named the town Florin (from the Latin word Flora-meaning flower) because of the various wildflowers in the area.
The name Florin became official in 1875, when the train station and the post office opened in Florin. In 1875, the Railroad began transporting Tokay Grapes and strawberries throughout California. In 1875, F. Sugden was the first postmaster and Johnson & Sugden opened the first store in Florin. Some say Sugden and Johnson were the founding fathers of Florin. The first hotel opened in 1875, and the schoolhouse was built in 1877. In 1897, Frasinetti Winery was established and today is the oldest family operated winery in Northern California.
In the 1890s, the Chinese laborers in the fields were replaced by Japanese immigrants. Florin became a vibrant Japanese-American farming community. With the new Japanese laborers the fields shifted from wheat and hay to cultivating strawberries, flowers and vineyards.
Between 1900 and 1910, the Japanese immigrants bought property, established farms and developed a residential and business community. Florin became one of the largest Japanese communities in California and the Japanese called the Florin area Taishoku. The Japanese farmers quickly branched out into wholesaling, retailing and distributing their products. The Japanese community built Florin’s Buddhist Temple in 1919, and in 1938, added a large gymnasium.
In 1942, President Roosevelt signed government Order 9066, which required the removal of the Japanese farmers in Florin and throughout the United States. From 1942-1945, Japanese-Americans were incarcerated in concentration camps, including the Manzanar camp in Inyo County and the Tule Lake camp in Modoc County. Tule Lake was the last camp to close in 1946. Some Japanese-Americans returned to the Florin area but others moved to new destinations in California and elsewhere.
Florin is an unincorporated area near the city of Sacramento. Florin is a Census Designated Place (CDP) and part of the Sacramento-Roseville-Folsom Metropolitan Statistical Area. A CDP, is the statistical equivalent of an incorporated city. A census-designated place does not have permanent boundaries like a city and there is not a city council, within the area’s borders. In a census-designated place, law enforcement and firefighting services usually fall upon the county that the unincorporated area is in. Pursuant to the 2020 Census, the combined population in the Sacramento-Roseville-Folsom Metropolitan Area was 528,001 residents.
