FREMONT, CALIFORNIA OVERVIEW
Fremont is a diverse and multicultural city in Alameda County, in the San Francisco Bay Area of northern California. Fremont residents represent 155 countries and speak 135 languages
The city, named for explorer, soldier and politician John Frémont, was formed in 1956 through the consolidation of five small towns—Centerville, Irvington, Mission San José, Niles, and Warm Springs. The new city is now the fourth largest city in the San Francisco Bay Area, with 238,000 inhabitants.
Long before the Spanish arrived in California, thousands of native Ohlone inhabited the lands near what is now known as Fremont, sustained by the temperate climate and plentiful acorns, wild game and fish.
Mission San Jose, built in 1797 was the earliest settlement in the Fremont area, covering 900,000 acres in what is now Alameda and Contra Costa County. Eight towns sprang up around the mission, and in 1853, Washington Township was established. Five of the original township communities (Centerville, Irvington, Mission San Jose, Niles and Warm Springs) became present day Fremont.
Like much of Alameda County, the area around Fremont was originally agrarian, with dairies, orchards and grazing lands. Because of its location, on the north/south road to Los Angeles, as well as its gateway location to the gold rush communities, Mission San Jose became an important supply center. This continued as the transcontinental railroads crept towards the West coast. One of the townships, Niles became the hub of the Pacific Railroad lines. The Western Pacific railroad began servicing the area in 1910.
The eyes of the world were focused on tiny Niles between 1912 and 1916 when the area’s rolling hills provided the backdrop for silent films, produced by the Essanay Film Manufacturing Company. Gilbert “Broncho Billy” Anderson and Charlie Chaplin and Wallace Beery all filmed in Niles.
Niles also featured industries serving the building trades, including Kraftile Co., Dickey Clay Manufacturing, Pacific States Steel Corp and the largest commercial nursery west of the Rockies. The California Nursery featured hybrids introduced by Luther Burbank and others. By the 1970’s, 96% of the nursery’s land had been sold to create housing.
By the 1950’s the automobile replaced the railroad as the region’s main form of transportation. Highway 17, now 880 from Oakland to San Jose ran through the area. A General Motors plant opened in 1963 and was one of the area’s largest employers. Production problems led to its closing in 1982. Two years later, it became NUMMI, a joint venture between Toyota and General Motors. NUMMI shut down its operations in 2010. The plant now produces Tesla electric vehicles.
Today companies headquartered in Fremont include Antec Inc, Corsair Memory, Ikanos Communications, Lam Research, Oplink Communications, SYNNEX, and S3 Graphics. According to reports, Fremont is ranked No. 1 in the U.S. for technology start-up businesses per capita and has received over $1 billion of venture capital funding.
