GLENDORA, CALIFORNIA OVERVIEW

Glendora, is located in the foothills of the San Gabriel Mountain, in Los Angeles County. According to the 2021, U.S. Census Bureau, the estimated population is 50,824.  Glendora is 26.8 miles from Los Angeles, 39.8 miles from Long Beach, 42 miles from Santa Monica and 31.6 miles from Santa Ana, California.  Glendora was founded in 1877 and incorporated as a city on November 13, 1911.

The Indigenous residents of the area were the Tongva Native Americans.  The Tongva People inhabited approximately a 4000 mile territory in the Greater Los Angeles area. In 1771, the Spaniards founded San Gabriel Arcangel Mission in the Los Angeles area.  The Franciscan priests referred to the Native Americans as the Gabrielino Indians.  The native tribes have also been referred to as the Gabrielino-Tongva Tribe.   In addition, the Hahanog-na Indian tribe, a branch of the Tongva Nation (part of the Shoshone language group) lived in the northern part of the San Gabriel Valley, including in the canyon and the surrounding mountains.

In 1837,  Governor Juan Bautista Alvarado awarded a land grant to Ignacio Palomares and Ricardo Vejar which they named Rancho San Jose.  Rancho San Jose was created from parts of the old Spanish San Gabriel Arcangel Mission.  The city of Glendora lies within the old Rancho San Jose.  In 1846, parts of Rancho San Jose was sold to Henry Dalton.

Mexico ceded California to the United States Government in 1848.  The Homestead Act, signed by President Abraham Lincoln on May 20, 1862, transformed the American West. In the mid-1800s, the San Gabriel Valley, including Glendora was declared open government land which brought numerous homesteaders to the area.  In 1874, two prominent settler’s John Bender and William Bryant, homesteaded in the Glendora area and planted vegetables, fruit trees, wheat and other agricultural products.

In 1885, Glendora’s founding father George D. Whitcomb, from Chicago arrived in the area. Whitcomb ultimately named the town in two parts, one part described the Glenn on his property and the second part incorporated a portion of his wife Leadora’s name, resulting in the town’s name of “Glendora.”  In 1887, Whitcomb formed the Glendora Land Company, and proceeded to lay out a town and created 291 lots for sale. On April 1, 1887,  all 291 lots were sold in a public sale.

Glendora is at the base of the San Gabriel Mountains. It is known as the “Pride of the Foothills.” In the early 1900s, Glendora was an agricultural area growing crops, including citrus trees.  Glendora’s packing houses shipped its fruit on Santa Fe Trains throughout the country.

Downtown Glendora lies on the original 1926 configuration of Route 66, which was subsequently moved south of the central part of the city in 1933. There are many classic sites along old Route 66 in Glendora, including the Art Deco gas station and the Palm Tropics Motel.  Currently, Glendora is accessible through Interstate 10, 15, 215, 610 and state highways 57 and 210.

Glendora is part of the greater Los Angeles Metropolitan Area and like most of Southern California it had a population and housing boom after World War II.  Today, Glendora is predominantly a residential community.
