HAYWARD, CALIFORNIA OVERVIEW
Hayward is a diverse and multicultural city in Alameda County, in the San Francisco Bay Area of northern California. Nearly 160,000 people make their home in Hayward.
Long before the Spanish arrived in California, thousands of native Ohlone and Yrgin inhabited the lands near what is now called Hayward, sustained by the temperate climate and plentiful acorns, wild game and fish.
The land that is now Hayward was originally granted to Guillermo Castro as a reward for his years of military service. Castro, a career soldier and surveyor, had been posted to the San Jose pueblo. He was given 27,000 acres, and raised cattle and sheep. The remains of Castro’s adobe was discovered many years later under the foundation of Hayward original city hall.
Having failed to strike it rich during California’s gold rush, William Hayward passed through the Castro land holdings on his way to San Francisco in 1851. He purchased several acres and set up a general store on the corner of what is now Mission Blvd and A street. The business grew and expanded, and a hotel, Hayward’s was added to service the needs of passengers on the stage coach route to San Jose. Today, the city bears his name.
Hayward was devastated by a large earthquake in October 21, 1868, when the southern segment of the Hayward Fault ruptured. The quake, estimated to be a 6.8, lasted for 40 seconds and was felt as far away as Nevada. Thirty people died, and nearly every building in the Hayward area was destroyed or damaged. The total damage was estimated at $350,000 (nearly 6 million in today’s dollars).
Over the years, the Castro ranch was subdivided and sold off. By the late 1800s, the abundance of orchards and farms led to Hayward’s nickname “Heart of the Garden of Eden.” Hayward soon emerged as a center for fruit processing, packing and drying industries. By the 1920’s, the Hunt’s plant in Hayward employed up to seasonal 1,000 workers.
Hayward’s municipal airport was was built in 1942 during World War II, and was declared surplus after the war. Today, over 450 aircraft are based there.
Hayward is now considered by many to be the northernmost outpost of the Silicon valley, and is home to several corporate headquarters and manufacturing facilities. Alphabet Energy, Annabelle candy, Dust networks, Kosan Biosciences, and Gillig are all headquartered in Hayward.
