HERCULES CALIFORNIA OVERVIEW
Hercules is a diverse and multicultural city in Contra Costa County, in the San Francisco Bay Area of northern California. Hercules began its existence as a quintessential company town and has grown into a community with nearly 25,000 residents
17,000 acres including what is now Hercules was part of a land grant given to Ygnacio Martinez for his service as the commandant of the Presidio of San Francisco. The property bordered San Pablo Bay. By the late1800’s, the Central Pacific Railroad and the Atchison, Topeka and Santa Fe Railroad ran through the area.
In 1879, the California Powder Company bought 44 acres in what is now Hercules to use for its explosives manufacturing. The area’s relative remoteness, as well as its proximity to the bay and to the railroad were important factors in its purchase. The company manufactured explosives including dynamite, black powder and TNT. The main plant would be built in a ravine, to protect the area in case of accidental explosion. In December, 1900, with a population of less than 100, Hercules became an incorporated town, and was named after the company’s product, Hercules Black Powder. The explosives manufactured in Hercules played an important role during both World wars and in the aftermath of the 1906 San Francisco earthquake, when sections of San Francisco were dynamited to keep the fire from spreading.
The dynamite factory in Hercules relied heavily on Chinese labor until 1913. The Chinese workers lived in simple wooden dormitories close to the plant’s main entrance. The men were charged for their room and meals. Between 1881 and 1908 there were eight deadly explosions. Seventy five percent of the 106 killed were Chinese. Twenty-four men were killed in a February 1908 explosion, the largest in the history of the plant. More deadly explosions occurred in 1944, 1948 and 1953.
Hercules had the largest population of the company towns in the East Bay. A guide to 1930s California listed its population at 392, all associated with the factory. In the 1940’s the company decided to build a fertilizer plant on the site. Hercules Powder was renamed as Hercules, Incorporated.
Another major local business was the Pacific Refinery Company, which opened in Hercules in 1976 and for many years, was the largest employer in the city. Originally constructed by Gulf Oil in 1966, it eventually became a wholly-owned subsidiary of the Coastal Petroleum Company. It ceased operations in August 1995 and its 219 acre property was dedicated the land to the City of Hercules in 2000.
Today, Hercules, at the junction of Highway 4 and Interstate 80, is a quiet neighborhood of homes.
