LINCOLN, CALIFORNIA OVERVIEW
Lincoln is located in Northern California, in Placer County. The United States Census Bureau estimated that in 2023, Lincoln’s population was 54,538. Lincoln is situated 10 miles from Roseville, 29 miles from the city of Sacramento and about 116 miles from San Francisco. Lincoln was settled as a town in 1859, and incorporated as a city on August 7, 1890.
The indigenous people in the Lincoln area were the Nisenan (also “Nishinam”), a branch of the Maidu Indians, who had been in the area for more than 5000 years. Ba-Mu-Ma, a major Indian village, was the first known settlement in the present Lincoln area. The Maidu villages extended from the Sacramento Valley all the way to the Sierra Nevada Mountains. The Maidu name translates to “The People.” In 1832, European trappers in the area brought malaria and other diseases that severely affected the Maidu Indians. It is estimated that 50 to 75% of the native tribes perished from these diseases.
The 1848, Gold Rush resulted in a massive invasion of people from all over the world to California. By 1858, there were 10 mining towns within seven miles of the Lincoln area. According to estimates, more than 300,000 people came to the territory during the Gold Rush.
Lincoln began as railroad town. Colonel Charles Lincoln Wilson (1813-1890), came to California in 1849, and became a successful businessman in the transportation industry. He operated a toll road, and toll bridge in San Francisco, as well as operated a shipping line on the Sacramento River. He was the President of the Sacramento Valley Railroad and subsequently the founder of the California Central Railroad.
Colonel Wilson brought Theodore Dehone Judah to California. Theodore Judah, was an American civil engineer and arrived in California to construct the Sacramento Valley Railroad, which was the first railroad west of the Mississippi.
In 1856, Lincoln became the temporary terminus of California’s first railroad in Northern California. The town was named after Charles Lincoln Wilson, who bought the land, surveyed the area, laid out the lots, and sold the first lots in Lincoln by public auction in 1861.
Lincoln has many significant buildings that reflect its distinct history. The Fleming Building was built from 1863-1864, and was utilized by miners to weigh and sell their gold. The Emmada Building was erected in 1863, initially as the Templar Hall, but the building eventually housed other organizations and businesses through the years.
In 1873, coal was commercially mined in the area which exposed a valuable layered clay deposit. In 1874, the Gladding, McBean & Co., was founded in Lincoln. In 1875, Gladding, McBean constructed the first clay sewer pipe for sale west of the Rocky Mountains. It continued to make a multitude of pottery products for over 130 years in California and beyond. Gladding, McBean brought prosperity to Lincoln and through the years many residents worked for the company. After merging with Interpace and changing its name, the Pacific Coast Building Products company ultimately purchased the Gladding, McBean’s Lincoln factory and restored the historic name of Gladding, McBean.
While other California cities’ population have declined, Lincoln has experienced rapid suburban growth. The 2020 Census lists its population at 49,747 but in 2023 the census estimates Lincoln’s population at 54,538, which is a 9.6% increase.
Lincoln is considered a part of the Sacramento-Roseville-Folsom Metropolitan Area. A Metropolitan Area is a core area or major city with a large population center, that includes its suburban communities and nearby towns that have a high degree of economic and social influence with that core. Per the United States Census Data, in 2021, the population of the Sacramento-Roseville Folsom Metropolitan Area was about 2.41 million people.
