Morgan Hill Mesothelioma

Morgan Hill, California Overview

The 2023 United States census data estimates 44,478 residents reside in Morgan Hill, California.  Morgan Hill covers an area of 12.94 square miles in Santa Clara County.  It is 23 miles from San Jose, 61 miles from Oakland and 69 miles from San Francisco.  Morgan Hill is situated within the Greater San Francisco Bay Area.

The Ohlone People inhabited most of the San Francisco Bay area.  The Ohlone tribes are a collective of around 50 tribes with related languages.  The Thamien / Tamyen or Tamien people refer to the band of Ohlone Indians historically situated in Santa Clara County, including in Morgan Hill.  The Thamien people have also been referred to as the Santa Clara Costanoan.

However, Costanoan was a name the Spanish colonizers gave to the indigenous Ohlone tribes but today this term is considered offensive to many of the indigenous people.  In fact, the original Spanish outpost in 1777, was called La Mision Santa Clara de Thamien before the mission was relocated in 1784, and renamed Mission Santa Clara de Asis.

From 1769 –1797, the Mission Friars attempted to control and convert the Ohlone tribe .  The Spanish Missions became wealthy by utilizing Indian labor to cultivate the mission vineyards, orchards,  grain fields, and maintain the horses, sheep and cattle.  The Native Indian population was eventually decimated by abuse, European disease, and military and settlers’ conflicts.

Morgan Hill sits on part of Rancho Ojo del Agua de la Coche, an old 8,927 acre Mexican land grant, awarded by Gov. José Figueroa to Juan Maria Hernandez in 1835.  Rancho Ojo del Agua de la Coche is a Spanish term and translates into “Pig’s Spring.”

In 1846, Martin Murphy Senior bought Rancho Ojo del Agua de la Coche. By 1870, the large Martin family, through purchase, marriage and inheritance ended up acquiring 70,000 acres in the Morgan Hill area. In 1882, Diana Murphy married Hiram Morgan Hill and their ranch was known as the Morgan Hill Ranch.

In 1892, Diana Murphy sold her inherited 4,500 acres to real estate developer Chauncey Hatch Phillips. Mr. Phillips divided the area into lots and sold parcels. By 1896, a community had developed in the area and the town had a schoolhouse, post office, hotel and churches.  On November 10, 1906, the town incorporated and chose Morgan Hill as the name for the new city.

Morgan Hill’s roots are agrarian. The area grew a variety of products, including prunes, apricots, peaches, pears, apples and walnuts. It also developed vineyards until prohibition. Although, the area became a suburban residential community in the 1950s, it still retains its agrarian roots rowing stone fruits, mushrooms, vegetables and new vineyards.

Morgan Hill has experienced rapid residential growth from 1970 through the 2000s. Morgan Hill is at the southern end of Silicon Valley and is home to several high-tech companies.  Morgan Hill maintains its rural charm but also has a diverse and mobile community.  Morgan Hill has easy freeway access for commuters to the Central Valley, Silicon Valley and San Francisco.
