NEWARK CALIFORNIA OVERVIEW

Newark is located in Alameda County, in the San Francisco Bay Area of Northern California.  The United States 2023 Census Data estimates Newark’s population at 46,929 residents. Newark is 4 miles from Fremont, 24 miles from Oakland, 26 miles from the city of Alameda, 36 miles from San Francisco and 52 miles from Vallejo, CA.

Long before the Spanish arrived in California, thousands of Ohlone People inhabited the Northern California area, including in Alameda County. The Ohlone is a collective of around 50 tribes with related languages.  The Ohlone indigenous people were called Costanoan by the Spanish colonizers, a term which is now considered offensive by many indigenous people.

Many Ohlone people were eventually baptized by the Franciscans at several Northern California Missions, including Mission San Jose.  Mission San Jose was built in 1772, in what is now known as Fremont, CA.  In the early years the area around Mission San Jose, which was 4 miles from the present day Newark, supported a variety of crops, including wheat, grapes, olives and figs.  It was also essential ranching land that sustained, cattle, horses and sheep.

In 1872, J. Ross Browne purchased 20,000 acres in the Newark area to develop a townsite.  Mr. Browne ultimately sold the property to J. Barr Robertson, a Scotsman, who named the area, Newark after Newark Castle in Port Glasgow, Scotland.

The Southern Pacific Coast Railroad Company was incorporated in 1876, to purchase the unfinished Santa Clara Valley Company railroad at Dumbarton Point. Dumbarton Point was used as a transfer point for agricultural products from the Santa Clara Valley for transport to San Francisco.  The railroad company built a rail station, roundhouse and railway shops in Newark.  The completion of the Southern Pacific Coast Railroad in Newark triggered the development of hotels, stores, manufacturing and other business enterprises in Newark.  Salt production has been ongoing in Newark since the early 1850s.

In the late 1800s to mid-1900s, Newark was an individual town next to seven other smaller towns that were known as the Washington Township.  In 1878, the Pacific Land Investment Company bought the land belonging to the Washington Township and subdivided the land to form the town of Newark.

In the 1950s, Newark objected to being part of a group of six towns, including Newark, Centerville, Irvington, Mission San Jose, Niles and Warm Springs consolidation to form the city of Fremont.  The Newark residents decided to govern themselves and voted to incorporate their town as a city on September 22, 1955.   In the mid-20th Century, Newark’s economy was based on manufacturing, with many well known corporations like Wedgewood Stoves, National Steel Corporation and Peterbilt Trucks manufacturing in the city.  Newark is near Silicon Valley and enjoyed the growth of high-tech, bio-tech and health science companies in their city.  Today, Newark, Fremont and Union City are known as the Tri-City Area in Alameda, County.
