NEWPORT BEACH, CALIFORNIA OVERVIEW
Newport Beach is an affluent seaside community located in Orange County, California, 50 miles south of Los Angeles. There are eight islands within Newport Harbor: Bay Island, Collins Island, Harbor Island, Lido Isle, Linda Isle, Little Balboa Island, Newport Island, and Balboa Island. The man made islands of Newport Island, Balboa Island, Little Balboa Island, Collins Island, Harbor Island, Lido Isle and Linda Isle were created by dredging of the Newport Bay estuary. The city of Newport Beach has a reputation as a playground for the wealthy and privileged. Incorporated in 1906, over 85,000 people make their home in Newport Beach.
A historic flood in 1825 caused the Santa Ana River to change its course. Sand began building up in the Newport Harbor Bay, eventually forming the Balboa peninsula. The great flood of 1861-62 deposited additional sand and silt into the harbor, creating the islands.
The flooding of the past had left Newport Bay shallow, filled with sand bars, and difficult to navigate. To be useful for commerce, and shipping, and to truly function as a “new port”, a wharf needed to be built out to sea. Brothers James and Robert McFadden completed McFadden Wharf in the summer of 1888. The wharf was 1320 feet long and 60 feet wide and served as a distribution and shipping point for Orange, San Bernardino, and Riverside counties. By 1891, the wharf area was connected to the Santa Ana and Newport Railway, allowing for cost effective commercial transport. The McFaddens eventually sold the site to W.S. Collins, who envisioned the area as a recreational and residential hub. In 1939 the wharf was destroyed in a major storm, and was replaced by a municipal pier.
Attracted by the miles of largely undeveloped beaches, Hollywood studios shot scenes from the 1917 version of “Cleopatra,” by the harbor. Newport Beach also served as a film location for “To Have and Have Not” and “The Breaking Point.” Scenes from Lost, Gilligans Island, The West Wing, and The OC have also been shot here. Celebrities from television, film and sports including John Wayne, Rock Hudson, Shirley Temple, June Allison, Nicholas Cage, Jay Leno, Kobe Bryant, Michelle Pfeiffer and Candace Bergen have all had homes in the city of Newport Beach.
In 1953, over 50,000 Boy Scouts from across the country arrived in the area for the week long International Boy Scout Jamboree, camping on a 3,000 acre site near the Newport Harbor. Today Jamboree Road, named after the scouting event, is major thoroughfare through Newport Beach.
Historically, Newport Beach Harbor hosted shipyards, commercial fishing vessels, and a variety of other maritime ventures. Today, with over 9,000 pleasure boats, it is the largest recreational harbor on the west coast.
