PITTSBURG, CALIFORNIA OVERVIEW
The city of Pittsburg is in Contra Costa County, located in the San Francisco Bay Area of Northern California. Over 70,000 people make their home in Pittsburg.
Before it was registered as Pittsburg in 1911, this town at the junction of the Sacramento and San Joaquin Rivers was named New York of the Pacific, changing its name to New York Landing and again to Black Diamond.
Black Diamond references the local coal fields. At its heyday the area hosted 12 mines and was known as the Mount Diablo Coalfield. The coal produced was fairly low grade but it was readily accessible and was economical to ship as far as Sacramento and Stockton. Black Diamond coal helped fuel California’s industrial revolution. Over the years, nearly four million tons of coal were removed. As the coal mines closed, the area became ranch land. Today it is part of the East Bay Regional Park system.
In 1906, the Columbia Geneva Steel Company opened in Pittsburg. Consisting of 60 employees and a single 150-ton open hearth, the plant furnished steel castings for local industries. In 1911 the community of Black Diamond was renamed Pittsburg after the other steel-producing city across the country.
Pittsburg’s reputation as an industrial center continued. Employing 250, the Bowers Rubber Works, manufacturing fire hose, belting, packing and automobile tires was the largest factory for the manufacture of rubber products west of Chicago. Pittsburg also hosted the only elector-chemical plant on the Pacific Coast.
In subsequent years, the steel mill expanded to include the West’s first nail mill. In 1930, Columbia became a subsidiary of U.S. Steel Company. Expansion and growth continued to meet the explosive demand for steel products during WWII. By the 1950s, 5,200 employees worked at the steel plant. Today, the Pittsburg plant has been renamed USS-Posco, and is still one of the largest public sector employers in the city.
