The settlers built churches and schools which ultimately led to the current city of Placentia.
The 1898, discovery of oil in the Brea-Olinda Oil Field in northern Orange County, about five miles northeast of Placentia, produced economic growth in the area. The town grew with oil workers and businesses moving to the area. The Brea Olinda Oil Field was the first of the 50 largest oil strikes in California. In its years of operation, the oil field produced over 412 million barrels of oil. In 1880, Richard Gilman planted the first commercially grown Valencia orange groves in Placentia. Placentia was home to the Valencia Orange Growing and Packing Company. In 1910, the Santa Fe Railroad built a station in Placentia to transport the town’s oranges and other agricultural products to Los Angeles.
