PLACENTIA, CALIFORNIA OVERVIEW

Placentia is a city located in northern Orange County, California.  Placentia is approximately 5 miles from Anaheim, 10 miles from Santa Ana, 30 miles from Los Angeles and 32 miles from Long Beach, California.  The 2022 census data estimates Placentia has a total population of 51,951.  Placentia was incorporated as a city on December 2, 1926.

The Indigenous residents in Northern Orange County including in the Placentia area were the Tongva Native Americans, a Shoshonean, Takic speaking tribe.  The indigenous Native Americans have also been referred to as the Gabrielino-Tongva Tribe, because the Franciscan priests from the nearby San Gabriel Archangel Mission (founded in 1771)  referred to the Tongva Native Americans as the Gabrielino Indians.  The Hutuknga (or Hotuuknga) Indian village in Yorba Linda, CA is about 4 miles from Placentia.

Placentia sits on part of the 35,970 acre Rancho San Juan Cajon De Santa Ana land grant, issued by Mexico’s Governor Juan Alvarado to Juan Pacifico Ontiveros in 1837.  In 1865, one of the first American settlers in the area was Daniel Kraemer and his family, who bought 3,900 acres of Rancho San Juan Cajon De Santa Ana.  Daniel Kramer and other settlers in the area, including the McFadden family in 1868, established the foundation for a budding town.  The settlers built churches and schools which ultimately led to the current city of Placentia.

The 1898, discovery of oil in the Brea-Olinda Oil Field in northern Orange County, about five miles northeast of Placentia, produced economic growth in the area.  The town grew with oil workers and businesses moving to the area.  The Brea Olinda Oil Field was the first of the 50 largest oil strikes in California.  In its years of operation, the oil field produced over 412 million barrels of oil.  Also, Union Oil Company (Unocal, 1890-2005) drilled the “Chapman Gusher” in March of 1919 near Placentia, California. When completed, the well produced 8,000 barrels of oil a day, encouraging many speculators to come to the area.

Placentia’s economy was also based on agriculture.  Placentia was known for its oranges, walnuts, avocados, vegetables and grapes. In 1880, Richard Gilman planted the first commercially grown Valencia orange groves in Placentia. Placentia was home to the Valencia Orange Growing and Packing Company.  In 1910, the Santa Fe Railroad built a station in Placentia to transport the town’s oranges and other agricultural products to Los Angeles.

Placentia has much to offer residents and visitors alike.  Placentia has conserved several historical sites, including the 1902, Bradford House and the 1898, ranch house alongside a citrus grove in Georgia Key Ranch Historic Park.  Placentia also has many parks, trails and recreational areas.  It has Kramer Memorial Park in the city and easy access to the nearby Chino Hills State Park and Carbon Canyon Regional Park.

Like most California cities, Placentia’s population boomed after world War II continuing through the 1970s, which transformed Palencia’s orange groves into residential communities.  Today, Placentia is a bedroom community for Orange County and the greater Los Angeles area.
