PORTERVILLE, CALIFORNIA OVERVIEW
Porterville, is a city in Tulare County, California. It lies on the Tule River, at the base of the Southern Sierra Nevada mountains and is on the eastern side of the San Joaquin Valley. Although, the town of Porterville began roughly in the 1850s by selling supplies to the Gold Rush pioneers, it was not incorporated as a city until May 7, 1902. Porterville is about 23 miles from Visalia, 50 miles from Bakersfield, 69 miles from Fresno and 159 miles from Los Angeles.
The Indigenous residents in and around Tulare County were the Koyeti tribe towards the west and the Yandanchi tribe towards the east. Both of these tribes were branches of the Yokut Indians that occupied the San Joaquin Valley for thousands of years. Unfortunately, the Tule River Indian War of 1856, resulted in a massacre of the Native Indians. In 1873, the current Tule River Indian Reservation was moved 10 miles to the southeast of Porterville.
In 1858, the Butterfield Overland Mail established the Tule River Stagecoach Station in the town that became Porterville. In 1860, Royal Porter Putman (Porter) became the manager the Tule River Stagecoach Station. Porter eventually purchased 40 acres in the area and built a two story hotel which he named Porter Station.
In 1862, after a 20 year drought in the region, 20 inches of rain fell in Porterville that consequently altered the course of the Tule River. Porter’s acres were permanently drained when the river changed course. In 1864, Porter outlined streets on his land and plotted lots for homes which became Porterville. Porterville also flourished when the Southern Pacific Railroad developed a new line from Fresno to Porterville and provided services for visitors and products. Due to population growth and a prospering town, Porterville incorporated as a city on May 7, 1902.
Porterville’s economy was initially agriculturally based with farms and cattle grazing. Porterville relied on dairy farms and products, crops of grapes, nuts and citrus groves. Today, its economy includes major employers, like the Walmart Distribution Center, Eagle Mountain Casino, Adventist Health, Land O’Lakes, Monrovia Nurseries and other diverse companies.
Porterville is the gateway to the Sequoia National Park which was established in 1890, as the second national park in the United States. The Sequoia National Park includes Mount Whitney which is 14,505 feet above sea level and is the highest summit in the 48 contiguous states. Porterville is also near Kings Canyon National Park. The National Park Service refers to both parks as one division, the Sequoia and Kings Canyon National Park.
