RANCHO SANTA MARGARITA, CALIFORNIA OVERVIEW

Rancho Santa Margarita is in Orange County, California. It is about 5 miles from Mission Viejo, 22 miles from Santa Ana, 53 miles from Los Angeles, and 79 miles from San Diego.  According to the 2023 United States Census Bureau Rancho Santa Margarita’s population is estimated as 46,182.  It is down 3.7% from the 2020 Census population of 47,963.  Rancho Santa Margarita was designed as a master-planned community.

Orange County was home to the Tongva and Acjachemen Indian tribes.  The Acjachemen village of Alume was situated in Rancho Santa Margarita, between Trabuco Creek and Tijeras Creek.  After the Spaniards arrived in the area the Spaniards named the native tribes the Gabrieleno and the Juaneno Indians due to the tribes proximity to the San Gabriel Mission and the San Juan Capistrano Mission.  In 1848, all of California was ceded to the United States pursuant to the Treaty of Guadalupe Hidalgo.

The city of Rancho Santa Margarita was built on part of two old Mexican land grants, Rancho Mission Viejo and Rancho Trabuco.  Many of California’s present municipal names don’t actually line up with the old Mexican rancho boundaries.  It is important to distinguish Rancho Santa Margarita from Rancho Santa Margarita y Las Flores because Rancho Santa Margarita y Las Flores, was in San Diego County.  The historical Rancho Santa Margarita y Las Flores is now Camp Pendleton in San Diego County.

After 1942 the Trabuco and the Mission Viejo Ranchos were combined under the Mission Viejo name. Therefore, Rancho Santa Margarita city limits fall within the borders of the Rancho Mission Viejo in Orange County.  Rancho Mission Viejo was subdivided and encompasses four master-planned communities: the City of Mission Viejo, City of Rancho Santa Margarita, Las Flores, and Ladera Ranch.

In 1983, the Santa Margarita Company was formed to manage the development of the new community that they call Santa Margarita.  In 1985, in order to avoid confusion with the old Rancho Santa Margarita y Las Flores in San Diego, the town’s name was changed to Rancho Santa Margarita. The first homes of the new master-planned community in the town of Rancho Santa Margarita went on sale in 1986.

In November of 1999, the residents of Rancho Santa Margarita and the five neighboring communities voted to incorporate their communities into a city. Rancho Santa Margarita was officially incorporated as a city on January 1, 2000. It is one of the youngest cities in Orange County.

According to the United States Census Bureau, Rancho Santa Margarita’s total land area is 13.04 miles.  It is situated along the foothills of the Santa Ana Mountains, on a high Plateau known as Plano Trabuco. Rancho Santa Margarita’s population reflects a diverse racial population of 68.4% white, 12.5% Asian and 20.4% Latino.
