RICHMOND CALIFORNIA OVERVIEW
The City of Richmond is on the western shore of Contra Costa County in the San Francisco Bay area of Northern California. Over 110,000 people make their home in Richmond.
Before the European settlement the Richmond area was the home to bands of the Ohlone people, hunter gatherers who were sustained by the acorns, roots, berries and plentiful game of the area.
In 1823, Don Francisco Castro was given nearly 18,000 acres of land in what is now known as Contra Costa county. The city of Richmond, incorporated in 1905, was established on a portion of Castro’s land grant.
Richmond’s reputation as an industrial city was cemented in the early part of the 20th century, as the Standard Oil Refinery, Winehaven, Pullman Palace Car Shops, American Radiator, Standard Sanitary Company, Stauffer Chemical Company and other companies relocated or established new facilities in the city. Standard Oil, now known as Chevron USA has had a consistent presence in Richmond since 1901. Today, it employs 1,300, covers 2,900 acres and has a capacity of 225,000 barrels a day.
The city of Richmond is best known for its role during the World War II years. In 3 years, the city’s population exploded from 20,000 to over 100,000. Migrants arrived from all over the nation, lured by jobs in the war industries, particularly the shipyards. The new migrants contributed to the cultural and ethnic diversity of the area. Four Kaiser shipyards, the largest shipbuilding operation on the Pacific Coast, were located in Richmond. They were responsible for launching an astonishing 747 ships, completing a Liberty ship in two weeks. Using mass assembly line techniques these ships were completed in two-thirds the amount of time and at a quarter of the cost of other shipyards. By 1943, an unprecedented 14 percent of all production workers at the Richmond shipyards were women. Nearly 60 additional war-related services and industries were also located in Richmond.
The Kaiser shipyards provided their employees with on-site child care and a health maintenance organization which has endured until the present time. The current Kaiser Permanente system evolved from the industrial health care programs for construction, shipyard, and steel mill workers during the war years.
Post war, many industries moved into the vacated shipyard buildings, including Kaiser Aircraft, Garwood, Butler, Southwest Welding and Pacific Vegetable Oil.
Today, the Richmond is called “The City of Pride and Purpose” . The Rosie the Riveter World War II /Home Front National Historical Park tells the story of Richmond’s contributions to the home-front, and is located on the site of one of the former shipyards.
