Rohnert Park Mesothelioma

ROHNERT PARK, CALIFORNIA OVERVIEW

Rohnert Park, is a city in Northern California in Sonoma County. The 2023, U.S. Census estimates Rohnert Park’s population was 44,546 residents.  Rohnert Park is about 48 miles from San Francisco, 37 miles from Vallejo, 34 miles from Mare Island Naval Shipyard, 56 miles from Travis Air Force Base and 52 miles from Oakland, California

The Coastal Miwok people were the indigenous people in the area now known as Rohnert Park. The Coastal Miwoks lived in Marin and Sonoma counties.  The Coastal Miwoks were part of the greater Miwok Nation who inhabited central California and the mid-Sierras as far southeast as the Yosemite Valley.  There was a Coastal Miwok Village called Kota’ti near Rohnert Park. Apparently, the Coastal Miwok chief had the same name.

Mission San Rafael was built in 1817, and Mission Sonoma was built in 1823, with Indian labor. Both missions used the Natives to grow and harvest crops, and manage the livestock. Hundreds of Native Americans, including the Coastal Miwok people were decimated by European disease, and armed conflict with the military, the miners and the settlers.  Others were forced onto reservations.

Rohnert Park sits on part of a 17,238.60 acre Mexican land grant awarded by Mexican Governor Micheltorena to Captain Juan Castaneda in July 1844, which was named Rancho Cotate (not Cotati).  Rancho Cotate was part of the Vallejo Township.  Captain Castaneda never developed the ranch or fulfilled the legal conditions to maintain the land grant, therefore Rancho Cotate passed to Thomas Larkin and then to Joseph Ruckle.  Dr. Thomas S. Page bought Rancho Cotate from Joesph Ruckle.  It is important to note, that Rancho Cotate was so large that today it encompasses the cities of Penngrove, Cotati and Rohnert Park.

The 1849, California Gold Rush brought thousands of people from around the world to California, including to Sonoma County.  In 1858, Rancho Cotate’s 17,238.60 acre land grant was patented to Dr. Thomas Page.  In the late 1890s, the Page family subdivided their ranch into parcels and sold some of the land to new settlers, squatters, and ex-49er miners.

In 1929, Waldo Emerson Rohnert purchased a ranch in the area and built two ditches to handle the seasonal flooding. His son, Fred Rohnert took over the successful ranch and established Rohnert Seed Farm, a seed growing business.  Rohnert Seed Farm became a major success for the county. The town of Rohnert Park was named after the Rohnert family.

Up until 1950, Rohnert Park’s economy was primarily agricultural. After World War II and with the completion of the new US Route 101 in 1957, Rohnert Park expanded exponentially. Like most of California, many workers and Veterans needed housing in the area.

In the mid-1950s, the town of Rohnert Park was developed as a planned city and each neighborhood was designed around a park and an elementary school.  In addition, there was an area dedicated for commercial and industrial development to support the new community. On August 29, 1962, Rohnert Park was incorporated as a new city in Sonoma County.   Rohnert Park is the third largest city in Sonoma County.

Rohnert Park has a small reservoir called Roberts Lake at the north end of the city. It also has five creeks within the city’s borders, including Laguna de Santa Rosa, Copeland Creek, Hinebaugh Creek, Crane Creek and Five Creek.  Rohnert Park is only one of two cities in California that operates a Department of Public Safety that controls its Fire and Police Department.

Today Rohnert Park is a family oriented community offering locals and visitors many outdoor activities, a variety of restaurants and specialty farm goods. It offers easy access to the San Francisco Bay Area and lies in the middle of Sonoma County’s wine Country.
