Swift proposed the name South San Francisco since the Swift Companies were already established in South Chicago and South Omaha.
In 1890, Peter Iler with Chicago meat packers Armour, Swift and others acquired Charles Lux and Millers’s original properties. In 1891, they formed the South San Francisco Land and Improvement Company with Peter Iler as general manager. In 1892, the Improvement Company divided the land into industrial and residential areas.
In 1908, South San Francisco incorporated as a city. Many diverse industries moved to South San Francisco, including Pacific Jupiter Steel Mill, Bethlehem Steel Mill, Fuller Paint, brick, lumber and tile companies.
