Where the two rail lines met, Tracy was established. J.H. Stewart named the new town after railroad Director, Lathrop J. Tracy, who lived in Mansfield, Ohio. In December 1878, the Central Pacific R.R. transferred all railroad operations to the new town of Tracy, thereby ensuring Ellis’s demise. Tracy became a major railroad hub that continued through the1960’s when other rails closed.
In 1915, the first irrigation district ensured Tracy’s population growth and continuation with farming, ranching and agriculture.
