Whittier Mesothelioma

WHITTIER, CALIFORNIA OVERVIEW

Whittier, is located in Southern California, in Los Angeles County.  According to the U.S. Census, the 2022, estimated population was 84,496.  Whittier is 10 miles from Downey, 20 miles from Los Angeles, and 27 miles from Torrance, California.  Whittier was incorporated as a city in 1898, and was ratified as a charter city in 1955.

The Indigenous residents of the area were the Tongva Native Americans.  They have also been referred to as the Gabrielino-Tongva Tribe.  The Tongva People inhabited approximately a 4000 mile territory in the Greater Los Angeles area. The San Gabriel Mission used Indian labor and became wealthy, with orchards, vineyards and herds.

Whittier sits on part of Rancho Paso de Bartolo which was part of an 1835, Mexican land grant. The land was purchased by several persons including John Thomas.  In 1887, a group of Quakers formed the Pickering Land and Water Company and purchased the land from Thomas.  The Pickering Land and Water Company subdivided the land and sold the lots to establish a “Quaker Colony” but also sold lots to fair-minded people.  The town was named for John Greenleaf Whittier, a Quaker, a poet and newspaper editor  Although John Whittier never visited the town named after him, he dedicated a poem to the city of Whittier.

Early in the 19th Century Whittier’s economy was based on agriculture and oil. The farmers grew barley, beans, cabbage, corn, oats, peanuts, oranges, lemons and tomatoes.  However, Whittier became known internationally for its Quaker Brand citrus and later on as the largest walnut producer in the United States.

Like most of California, Whittier expanded quickly after World War II,  Consequently, housing tracts were developed where many citrus groves previously existed.  Whittier is a suburban community that is part of the greater Los Angeles metropolitan area. It is home to Whittier College which was originally founded as Whittier Academy in 1891. It is also home to several historical landmarks, including the Pio Pico House, Southern Pacific Railroad Depot, the Jonathan Bailey House and the National Bank of Whittier Building.
